Description : Students from the UNO Teacher Scholars Academy are partnering with fifth grade students from Crestridge Elementary School to research the impacts of redlining in Omaha. The students are working with Inclusive Communities and The Union for Contemporary Art to learn about redlining before participating in a series of table talks and group discussions where they will present to community members and school administrators about what they learned. Description : Anand Prahlad will read from his memoir The Secret Life of a Black Aspie, winner of the 2016 Permafrost Prize Award for Nonfiction. The Secret Life of a Black Aspie relates the challenges and rewards of being both black and neurodivergent in America, offering a singular perspective on life with Asperger’s. Steve Silberman, author of Neurotribes: The legacy of Autism and the Future of Neurodiversity, praised the memoir as “a remarkable, important, brilliantly written book.” Part of Black History Month with the UNO Office of Multicultural Affairs

Description : The lecture series honors the legacy of Santee citizen, American Indian rights activist, international recording artist, and Hollywood actor John Trudell. Drawing upon an important visual archive of photographic images and film reels, Lonetree explores the complexities of cultural performance, modern labor, and the ongoing legacies of settler colonialism through the experiences of Ho-Chunk people performing Indigeneity within the contact zone of twentieth century Wisconsin. Particular attention is given to privileging the perspectives of the Indigenous people captured in the frame and the ongoing meaning that this visual archive has to our understanding of Ho-Chunk identity, the various ways Ho-Chunk people sought to make a living in the twentieth century, issues of representation, tourism, and survivance.

Description : UNO Students from CMST 1110 Fundamentals of Public Speaking courses will engage in the student philanthropy model of service learning, where course content and student learning is linked to charitable giving. Students select and research a community agency of their own interest, then develop and present a persuasive speech and call to action on behalf of the organization. This is a student led initiative, giving students a $1,000 grant to distribute to one community agency - the persuasive speech presentation with the best call to action. MPI Traditional Project.
