Description : Blackburn Alternative Program helps students achieve their social and academic goals through smaller classes, flexible scheduling, and supportive staffing. Food for Thought is a long-term service learning project that connects the culinary program at Blackburn with the senior’s programming at Adams Park Community Center. Every Wednesday, Blackburn students will create a healthy meal for the seniors at Adams Park. For this project, UNO students will focus on helping serve at the meals and interact with the seniors.  UNO students will also attend the Blackburn culinary class a few times during the project to develop relationships with student partners.  UNO students are expected to arrive at Adam’s Park no later than 11:30 am each Wednesday. Upon arrival, UNO students will set up supplies, help Blackburn students unload the food, serve drinks, and get to know the seniors. Throughout the meal, UNO students are able to interact with both Blackburn students and seniors. UNO students are also expected to visit Blackburn Alternative Program to create meaningful relationships with the Blackburn students. UNO students have the option of shadowing Blackburn’s social worker, Ms. Bonam. Over the semester, UNO students will work on a project identified by Adams Park Senior Center that supports the relationships, dignity, and worth of the participants of Adams Park Center.
