Description : UNO students from Professor Mariana Cruz’ Introduction to ESL course will work with families from the Learning Community Center (LCC) of South Omaha. The UNO students will be assigned a family to work with over the course of six weeks to build a trusting relationship. The students will prepare lessons and activities around topics of college readiness, including Financial Aid, scholarships, scheduling, advisors, and campus living, to familiarize families with the higher education system in the United States. Sessions held at the UNO Dodge and Scott Campuses will include student-lead campus tours for LCC families to experience a glimpse of campus life.

Description : UNO students from Marianna Cruz's Introduction to Teaching ESL course will visit the Learning Community Center of South Omaha (LCC). They will meet their assigned families for the first time. Students will lead icebreaker activities get to know their assigned families. Throughout the course of the fall semester, UNO students will curate learning plans and share helpful resources to guide the families in college preparedness. This provides an opporunity for the UNO students to implement what they are learning in the classroom. Due to remote learning UNO students will create 3 videos that will be shared with LCC and families via YouTube.

Description : This project was canceled due to remote learning. UNO students in Dr. Mitzi Ritzman’s Early Language Development course (SPED 4420) made home visits with LCC Navigators to families that the Learning Community Center of South Omaha (LCC) serves. Students came uo work with small children, with a fop with individualized interaction plans tcus on language and literacy, and shared the information and resources with the families. LCC’s educational navigators worked closely with UNO students on home visits. The UNO students were able to apply their knowledge and skills they learned in the class about developmental milestones and literacy with language components. They shared their home visit experiences at the final celebration.
