Description : This project will introduce the concept of OpenAg – Food Computer to K-12 students. The personal food computer is a tabletop-sized, controlled environment agriculture technology platform that uses robotic systems to control and monitor climate, energy, and plant growth inside of a specialized growing chamber. Climate variables such as carbon dioxide, air temperature, humidity, dissolved oxygen, potential hydrogen, electrical conductivity, and root-zone temperature are among the many conditions that can be controlled and monitored within the growing chamber to yield various phenotypic expressions in the plants [1,2]. UNO students will assist in building the food computer while the King Science students will develop formulas for growing food. Additionally the community partner, Parallel Technologies, will benefit from the data collection facilitated by students throughout the semester.

Description : """Students from UNO Instructor Bruce Chase’s Honors 3000 class partnered with Kristin Utterback’s King Science Middle School Health Care Academy class to learn from and support clients at Omaha’s MS Forward. MS Forward was created in 2003 as a person-focused place where those combatting the effects of disease or aging could go to engage in movement and strengthening in a supportive, inspiring, and safe space. The idea for this new project was born through a desire to provide students an opportunity to learn, interact, asses, and understand more about individuals living with chronic conditions. KS goals: To give students a hands-on learning experience that will showcase how to think holistically as a future health career professional. Do biopsychosocial assessments, develop workout routines and complete them with the MSForward clients. UNO class goals: provide honors student to mentor middle school student and engage with MS Forward clients in learning workout modifications for those with physical impairments. MSF goals: to give the clients a sense of purpose and giving back to the community. They get to share their stories and experiences with their disability."" "
