Description : The Nebraska Science Festival invites the public to attend a free panel discussion featuring women successful in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) careers. Panelists will share their life experiences, as well as lessons learned, as they inspire others to consider STEM careers. Panelists are: Deann Akins-Lewenthal, Ph.D., director of food safety and microbiology for Conagra Brands; Lydia Kang M.D., assistant professor of internal medicine at UNMC and author of historical, young adult and non-fiction books including: ""Quackery: A Brief History of the Worst Ways to Cure Everything"" (co-authored with Nate Pedersen); Amelia Tangeman, STEM outreach coordinator at the University of Nebraska at Omaha; and Nicole Mitchell, coordinator, the Whitney Young Academy and Project Ready, Urban League of Nebraska.

Description : Truancy programs focus on youth with unauthorized absences in order to prevent system involvement. Programs can become involved with youth at different stages of absenteeism, with schools referring youth who have 5-10 unexcused absences up to the county attorney’s officer referring youth to the program when their level of absences requires legal intervention. Truancy programs can also be part of diversion.

Description : "This workshop focuses on engaging eligible seniors within the Urban League of Nebraska, 7 OPS schools, as well as other school districts, to apply for the ULN Scholarship/MCC Scholarships. FAFSA, essay writing, community service requirements, letters of recommendation, transcripts, ACT/SAT, and importance of interviewing will be covered. The outcomes is for 90% of ULN eligible program seniors, as well as at least 100 total submissions.

Description : "The Urban Bird & Nature Alliance facilitated the planting of 125 shade trees along the Mandan Park trail on 13th and Missouri Avenue. Community volunteers along with UNO students and interns participated in the event. Bellevue, Creighton and College or St. Mary’s students were also part of the event. The project was an effort to sustain the urban forest along a trail that lost over 68 ash trees. People walk and bike along the trail and need shade. The trees will reduce heat islands as well as improve air quality. Sponsors and funders were the Arbor Day Foundation and the Hubbard Community Forestry Awards. Over 75 families, individuals and students from surrounding schools such as South High and PACE participated. Students, residents and the community at large learns about the importance of the urban forest. They work together to sustain and maintain the tree canopy either in their own neighborhood or park or other neighborhoods and parkland. They learn about the need for trees in barren areas, the infestation of the emerald ash borer on the city ash trees, reducing heat islands, improving air quality and the many benefits of trees. They learn about environmental justice. They also learn how to work together collaboratively to build their own environment which builds on pride of place. Together we leave a legacy of trees behind for ourselves and for future generations.
