Keep Omaha Beautiful (Spring 2018): 2017-18 Environmental Stewardship Keep Omaha Beautiful, Nathan Hale Middle School, Omaha Public Schools Communication, Service Learning Academy (SLA) Service Learning Course None Spring 2017-18 None None 17 272 0 35 385 0 Climate and Sustainability UNO Public Speaking Fundamental students and Nathan Hale Middle School students are working side by side to discover effective ways to present to their peers. UNO students are teaching methods of presenting to the middle school students that they can use when they present to their peers about urban environmental issues. The Middle School students create presentations that focus on the environmental impact of communities. The theme this semester is reduce, reuse, recycle and compost. Nathan Hale students signed up to complete clean up days with Keep Omaha Beautiful.

We may also bring a few other projects like creating reusable thank you postcards and sorting storm drains, like we do at 60 Minutes of Service.

Participants increase awareness of the Omaha community, their needs, assets, personnel, and practice. Participants demonstrate an understanding of the Pre-K-12 Service-Learning Standards for Quality Practice (NYLC, 2008). Participants understand the benefits of service learning and its connections to other key frameworks such as AAC&U High Impact Practices, 40 Developmental Assets, 21st Century Skills, and standards-driven curriculum. UNO, P-12, after-school program faculty, and community partners build collaborative relationships and begin service learning project planning. Participants are prepared to create quality service learning experiences.
Perspectives in Communication Studies (Fall 2017): 2017-18 Educational Support, Environmental Stewardship Keep Omaha Beautiful, Nathan Hale Middle School, Omaha Public Schools Communication, Service Learning Academy (SLA) Service Learning Course None Fall 2017-18 None None 29 246 0 68 510 0 Civic and Political Engagement, Neighborhood Revitalization, Climate and Sustainability Faculty and students from Nathan Hale Middle School have partnered with Keep Omaha Beautiful to assist with neighborhood and park clean ups this fall. Students will learn about urban heat, how heat impacts cities, and will understand their environmental foot print. Nathan Hale students will conduct research on Omaha’s urban heat and green space and compare it to another city. Students will present their findings with tri-fold poster presentations. UNO students will assist Nathan Hale students in designing their presentation and providing speaking tips.
Loud Speakers Club (Spring 2018): 2017-18 Environmental Stewardship Harvey Oaks Elementary, Keep Omaha Beautiful Communication, Service Learning Academy (SLA) Service Learning Course None Spring 2017-18 None None 19 247 0 15 285 0 Gardens/Plantlife This project will introduce 3rd and 4th grade students at Harvey Oaks Elementary School to public speaking and concepts developed from the nonprofit Keep Omaha Beautiful. Students choose a topic provided by Keep Omaha Beautiful to research and present at the end of the year. These topics include glass recycling, curbside recycling, household hazardous waste among other topics. While learning how to be environmentally friendly, students are introduced to concepts of speech making and public speaking. UNO students will assist students in the speech making process and provide help doing research. Harvey Oaks students will film a short 30 second Public Service Announcement for Keep Omaha Beautiful on their topics to provide them assistance in marketing the organization.

This project focuses on creating fluency, discussion, and mentorship between students, while learning and serving the community. This year’s topic is community beautification and environmental stewardship. Through partnerships with Keep Omaha Beautiful and FirstStar Fiber, students will learn about and practice this topic in the Omaha community.

Support is both needed and critical for the continuation and growth of Goodrich’s Futures Fair partnership with P4K, UNO/CPACS and the community. Goodrich and P4K, with the assistance of CPACS and UNO, intend to continue to promote the accessibility of higher education to underserved middle school students through meaningful engagement that will create an immediate tangible opportunity for educational and employment exploration through the Futures Fair.

Nonprofits coordinate meaningful work for interns to benefit the student experience in different ways. Students typically intern during the fall and spring semesters and may serve the same organization for more than one academic year. Each unique student that works as a Collaborative intern with this specific community partner is identified within this project.
