This report shows the various collaborative projects between UNO and the community. Various filters are provided to gain a better understanding of how different UNO units collaborate with the community.

Rad Women (Spring 2018): 2017-18 Arts, Culture and Humanities, Educational Support Blackburn Alternative High School, Omaha Public Schools Service Learning Academy (SLA), Writing Center Service Learning Course None Spring 2017-18 None None 0 0 0 6 72 0 STEM/STEM Education, Literacy, Art UNO Writing Center student consultants, led by Instructor Alea Hall, will work with the Blackburn Alternative Program students from Mrs. Hilary George’s Computer Graphic Design class. The writing consultants will help the Blackburn students to combine writing and art to highlight "rad women" in Omaha. They will also serve as mentors for the Blackburn students and built trusting relationships with them over the course of the semester. The art pieces will be featured in a gallery/showcase and proceeds from the gallery will be donated to the Youth Emergency Services, Inc.

The UNO students will carefully plan the lessons prior to their classroom visits. This semester's research focus is "rad women" in Omaha in conjunction with another SLA project.   The art pieces will be featured in a gallery/showcase and proceeds from the gallery will be donated to the Youth Emergency Services, Inc.

This semester, UNO students worked in Yearbook, Biology, and Art classes. The Yearbook class worked to develop web and print content for Pilgrim Baptist Church's 100th anniversary.

Every Wednesday, Blackburn students will create a healthy meal for the seniors at Adams Park. At this project, UNO students from Jeff Knapp's Social Work and Civic Engagement course will focus on helping serve at the meals and interact with the seniors creating intergenerational relationships. The project culminates with a Thanksgiving celebration, Fall Harvest, at Blackburn Alternative Program.

The UNO & BB students worked together to design and execute training plans for the dogs and collect data for UNO psychology studies. The students met at NHS 5 times to work with the dogs and had a final celebration at UNO to discuss their findings and share their experiences.

Autism Society of Nebraska Fall Festival (Fall 2020): 2020-21 (2083) Educational Support, Health and Wellness Autism Society of NE, Blackburn Alternative High School, Omaha Public Schools Service Learning Academy (SLA), Special Education and Communication Disorders Service Learning Course None Fall 2020-21 Fall 2020-21 20 200 0 0 0 0 Raise Awareness, Capacity Building UNO CDIS 8450 will help with creation of video modeling activities for the ASN Fall Festival. The ASN Fall Festival will be conducted via Zoom this semester. UNO SLP and OT students will be split into small groups and develop video models of activities ASN participants can do in the comfort of their own home. All brainstorming sessions between UNO SLP and Creighton OT students will happen via Zoom – meeting times will be scheduled by group members based on their individual schedules. All activities recorded will still be based around a Fall Festival theme.
Rad Women (Fall 2017): 2017-18 Arts, Culture and Humanities, Educational Support Blackburn Alternative High School, Omaha Public Schools English, Service Learning Academy (SLA) Service Learning Course None Fall 2017-18 None None 0 0 0 7 154 0 STEM/STEM Education, Literacy, Art The Writing Center led by Professor Alea Hall will help the Blackburn Alternative High School (BAHS) students to combine writing and art to highlight "rad women" in Omaha. The Writing Center will offer useful workshops (e.g. descriptive writing) and provide writing support to the BAHS students. UNO Writing Center's consultants will serve as mentors for the BAHS students. Students created a Facebook page to share their art and writing with the general community.

The Nebraska Humane Society benefits from this project because it provides valuable enrichment for animals in its care, works to make animals more adoptable, and furthers its mission of humane education to the general public.
Social Justice and Social Change (Fall 2016): 2016-17 Social Justice Blackburn Alternative High School, Omaha Public Schools, Nebraska AIDS Project Service Learning Academy (SLA), Social Work Service Learning Course None Fall 2016-17 None None 10 80 0 0 0 0 Social Justice Awareness UNO students work with Nebraska AIDS Project and UNO office of Multicultural Affairs to shadow program assistants, directors, etc. Graduate students in the class planned a panel for people to learn about NAP services. Social justice and social change is a sociology class taught through UNO by Alecia Anderson.  (This was not a P-16 project this semester, although planned as P-16, Carolyn Rabideaux at Blackburn (Carolyn.Rabideaux@ops.org) was not able to commit after the semester started.)
Food for Thought (Spring 2017): 2016-17 (002) Social Justice Adams Park Community Center, Blackburn Alternative High School, Omaha Public Schools Service Learning Academy (SLA), Social Work Service Learning Course None Spring 2016-17 None None 6 174 0 12 1,176 0 High school students in the Foods and Culinary programs at Blackburn Alternative Program prepare a meal throughout the week to serve to seniors at Adam’s Park Community Center. As the high schoolers serve the meal to the seniors, UNO students help to serve the seniors drinks and carry plates to their seats. Throughout the lunch hour, UNO and Blackburn students interact with the seniors through conversation, card games, bingo, and dominos.

It will start with UNO students conducting a "waste sort" on the UNO campus, then visit Blackburn to teach and go through the process with students. Food For Thought (Spring 2019): 2018-19 (1022) Educational Support, Health and Wellness Adams Park Community Center, Blackburn Alternative High School, Omaha Public Schools Service Learning Academy (SLA), Social Work Service Learning Course None Spring 2018-19 Spring 2018-19 1 5 0 0 0 0 Civic and Political Engagement, Youth Programming, Gerontology Blackburn Alternative Program helps students achieve their social and academic goals through smaller classes, flexible scheduling, and supportive staffing. Food for Thought is a long-term service learning project that connects the culinary program at Blackburn with the senior’s programming at Adams Park Community Center. Every Wednesday, Blackburn students will create a healthy meal for the seniors at Adams Park. For this project, UNO students will focus on helping serve at the meals and interact with the seniors.  UNO students will also attend the Blackburn culinary class a few times during the project to develop relationships with student partners.  UNO students are expected to arrive at Adam’s Park no later than 11:30 am each Wednesday. Upon arrival, UNO students will set up supplies, help Blackburn students unload the food, serve drinks, and get to know the seniors. Throughout the meal, UNO students are able to interact with both Blackburn students and seniors. UNO students are also expected to visit Blackburn Alternative Program to create meaningful relationships with the Blackburn students. UNO students have the option of shadowing Blackburn’s social worker, Ms. Bonam. Over the semester, UNO students will work on a project identified by Adams Park Senior Center that supports the relationships, dignity, and worth of the participants of Adams Park Center.
ADL Walk Against Hate (Fall 2021, Social Work and Civic Engagement): 2021-22 (2095) Educational Support, Social Justice Anti-Defamation League, Blackburn Alternative High School, Omaha Public Schools, Secondary Success Program Middle School Barbara Weitz Community Engagement Center (CEC), Service Learning Academy (SLA), Social Work Service Learning Course None Fall 2021-22 None 0 0 0 0 0 0 Capacity Building UNO students enrolled in Kersten Borer SOWK 1500-001: Social Work and Civic Engagement will research selected sites in ADL’s Walk Against Hate and interview community members who have a connection to the site. These interviews are recorded and turned into videos (Vidgrid) or podcasts that are played on the ADL website (adlplains.org). Students can also provide essays, artwork, or blurbs about their thoughts associated with the site. In addition, UNO students work alongside the Secondary Success Program (SSP) and Blackburn Art students to create pieces of art for a site or two in ADL’s Walk Against Hate. UNO students will meet with the SSP and Blackburn students to share about the interviews that will inspire the artwork.
Get the Word Out: 30 Americans (Spring 2019): 2018-19 (1079) Arts, Culture and Humanities, Social Justice Blackburn Alternative High School, Omaha Public Schools, Joslyn Art Museum Service Learning Academy (SLA) Service Learning Course None Spring 2018-19 Spring 2018-19 16 240 0 0 0 0 Art GWO is an ongoing partnership between Dr. Ritzman’s SPED 4750 Childhood Language Disorders class and Blackburn Alternative Program (BAP) high school students. Each year, the project has a different focus and community partner. This year, the project focus was on the 30 Americans exhibit at the Joslyn Art Museum. The UNO students taught 5 sessions throughout the semester in either Ms. Colon (English and Yearbook) or Ms. George (Arts and Computer Graphics) classes. SPED 4750 students learned to work hands-on in any type of classroom (“Language is Everywhere”) and BAP students received learning assistance in their respective classrooms. As a community partner, the Joslyn Art Museum worked with the Blackburn students to create podcasts focusing on the various art installments at the Joslyn. The Blackburn students’ podcasts can be heard on the Joslyn Art Museum's YouTube channel.

SPED 4750 students learned to work hands-on in any type of classroom (“Language is Everywhere”) and Blackburn students received learning assistance in their respective classrooms.
