This P-16 service learning project highlights environmental sustainability and STEAM concepts (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math). This project reinforces classroom curriculum for UNO and ONW students by further learning about sustainable materials management techniques in a real-world setting.

Four events occurred this semester. First they visited the zoo to learn about tagging monarch butterflies. The second and third times UNO and NW students gave presentations about international plants, respectively. ILUNO students were also introduced to American high school cultural activities such as homecoming. During the last event the students planted in the green house.
Sustainable Management (Spring 2018): 2017-18 Environmental Stewardship Northwest High School, Omaha Public Schools Environmental Studies, Service Learning Academy (SLA) Service Learning Course None Spring 2017-18 None None 1 1 0 1 1 0 Gardens/Plantlife This is a continuation of a project from Fall 2017 where students from Professor Steve Rodie’s Landscape Appreciation course and Mrs. Rachael Arens’ Omaha Northwest AP Environmental Science students jointly presented proposals for various sustainable material management techniques throughout Northwest High School and the University of Nebraska at Omaha. For the project this semester, ONW used their understanding of composting to build a composter for a Bellevue Restaurant, and to teach the employees of the restaurant how to use it. This project reinforces classroom curriculum for UNO and ONW students by further learning about sustainable materials management techniques in a real-world setting.
Chemistry Water Testing (Fall 2017): 2017-18 Environmental Stewardship Northwest High School, Omaha Public Schools, Omaha Healthy Kids Alliance Chemistry, Service Learning Academy (SLA) Service Learning Course None Fall 2017-18 None None 3 3 0 19 28 0 Clean Water/Water Management AP Chemistry students from Northwest High School and general chemistry students from UNO will test water from various homes around Omaha for lead. They will also test the theory that running water for a certain amount of seconds (5,10,15,30) decreases the lead contents to a safe level. They will learn how to use water testing instrumentation and about reporting results for the general public. They are working with Omaha Healthy Kids Alliance to raise awareness of water quality in Omaha as well as providing geographic information about lead content in different areas of the city. The NW High School students will visit UNO to get a tour, gather the water samples from the community, test them at UNO (with UNO students), and then debrief with OHKA and UNO students about the results and what they can do with those results.

Glacier Creek Environment (Spring 2019): 2018-19 (1034) Environmental Stewardship Glacier Creek Preserve, Northwest High School, Omaha Public Schools Service Learning Academy (SLA) Service Learning Course None Spring 2018-19 Spring 2018-19 9 108 0 0 0 0 Gardens/Plantlife UNO students from Instructor Andrew Miller’s Environmental Chemistry and Instrumental Analysis courses will work with Ms. Rachel Benzoni’s Honors Chemistry students from Northwest High Magnet School throughout the spring semester of 2019. This semester is the first time for them to work on this service learning project. UNO and Northwest students will visit Glacier Creek Preserve, which is a 172 ha (424 acre) preserve situated northwest of Omaha and part of UNO, for field sampling. After the field sampling, students will conduct field analysis, testing nitrogen mass in the soil samples. They will also develop a model of nitrogen movement using GIS mapping.

Sustained Dialogue (Spring 2017): 2016-17 Social Justice Anti-Defamation League, Northwest High School, Omaha Public Schools Political Science, Service Learning Academy (SLA) Service Learning Course None Spring 2016-17 None None 20 225 0 10 152 0 Inclusion, Diversity & Equity UNO Political Science students worked with Northwest High Magnet School students to build facilitation skills through planning a sustained dialogue event with the Anti-Defamation League. The students worked with small groups throughout the semester to simulate a conversation around how to make Omaha a more welcoming place. The UNO and Northwest students hosted area high school students on UNO's campus to hold a sustained dialogue event where they discussed problems facing Omaha and created action items of how they can be a part of finding solutions to those problems.
Water Quality Testing (Spring 2017): 2016-17 Environmental Stewardship Northwest High School, Omaha Public Schools, Omaha Healthy Kids Alliance Chemistry, Service Learning Academy (SLA) Service Learning Course None Spring 2016-17 None None 12 48 0 27 108 0 Clean Water/Water Management UNO Chemistry and Northwest HS (ONW) Honors Chemistry students came to UNO to learn about how to test water samples taken from the homes of the ONW students.  Through ion chromatography analysis, UNO and Northwest students were able to find out what chemicals existed in water samples taken from Northeast Omaha.  In addition, Kara Eastman of the Omaha Healthy Kids Alliance, taught the ONW group about the harmful effects of lead poisoning in the Omaha Community.  This will be a continuation project, culminating in the students taking what they have learned to produce informational pieces about lead in Omaha water that the Healthy Kids Alliance will be able to give to their clients.

They will visit the Wildlife Safari Park to test the Pawnee River's water quality and present their findings.

They will collect macroinvertebrate and water samples from the Pawnee River for water quality testing. The test results will be shared with representatives from Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium and Lee G. Simmons Conservation Park & Wildlife Safari at the final presentation.

UNO students will develop active listening and rapport-building skills while helping Circle of Friends members create personal goals with objectives, learn new skills, and adapt in social situations. The goal is to allow graduate social work students to learn clinical skills and Circle of Friends members to learn skills to utilize during and after high school.

The garden will feature plants of various types, including medicinal and pollinator plants as well as a garden to highlight both Native American traditions and the explorations of Lewis and Clark. This P-16 service learning project covers various environmental sustainability and STEAM concepts (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math). This project reinforces classroom curriculum for UNO and ONW students by teaching students about sustainable landscape design techniques in a real-world setting.

On January 30th, students testified to the LB 905 bill committee in Lincoln at the State Capitol in favor of a plastic bag ban.

The workshop will introduce them to the political process and possibly encourage them to run for office one day by inviting locally elected women officals to share their experiences and allowing the young women to practice developing a mock political campaign.

There will be a research symposium at the end.
Wildlife Safari Water Quality (Fall 2019): 2019-20 (1172) Educational Support, Environmental Stewardship Northwest High School, Omaha Public Schools, Omaha Henry Doorly Zoo & Aquarium Chemistry, Service Learning Academy (SLA) Service Learning Course None Fall 2019-20 Spring 2019-20 4 88 0 27 270 0 STEM/STEM Education, Clean Water/Water Management, Wildlife/Animal Welfare, Climate and Sustainability Students from Dr. Dana Richter-Egger's CHEM1180 course alongside Ms. Rachel Benzoni's AP/Honors Chemistry class from Northwest High School are parterned with Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo to test water quality at Wildlife Safari Park. Both student groups will meet at Wildlife Safari Park two times to sample and observe baseline water at multiple on-site ponds. Students will meet at UNO in November to discuss findings as they pertain to the project.

This P-16 service learning project highlighted environmental sustainability and Omaha’s efforts on plastic bag use. The students collaborated with Nebraska State Senator Wendy DeBoer to draft a bill to propose to the Nebraska Legislature. The bill is still being drafted by Northwest students.
