Food For Thought (Fall 2017): 2017-18 (001) Educational Support, Health and Wellness Adams Park Community Center, Blackburn Alternative High School, Omaha Public Schools Service Learning Academy (SLA), Social Work Service Learning Course None Fall 2017-18 None None 4 120 0 4 228 0 Civic and Political Engagement, Youth Programming, Gerontology Food for Thought is a long-term service learning project that connects the culinary program at Blackburn Alternative Program with the senior’s programming at Adams Park Community Center. Every Wednesday, Blackburn students will create a healthy meal for the seniors at Adams Park. At this project, UNO students from Jeff Knapp's Social Work and Civic Engagement course will focus on helping serve at the meals and interact with the seniors creating intergenerational relationships. The project culminates with a Thanksgiving celebration, Fall Harvest, at Blackburn Alternative Program.

Food for Thought (Spring 2017): 2016-17 (002) Social Justice Adams Park Community Center, Blackburn Alternative High School, Omaha Public Schools Service Learning Academy (SLA), Social Work Service Learning Course None Spring 2016-17 None None 6 174 0 12 1,176 0 High school students in the Foods and Culinary programs at Blackburn Alternative Program prepare a meal throughout the week to serve to seniors at Adam’s Park Community Center. As the high schoolers serve the meal to the seniors, UNO students help to serve the seniors drinks and carry plates to their seats. Throughout the lunch hour, UNO and Blackburn students interact with the seniors through conversation, card games, bingo, and dominos.

Food for Thought is a long-term service learning project that connects the culinary program at Blackburn with the senior’s programming at Adams Park Community Center. Every Wednesday, Blackburn students will create a healthy meal for the seniors at Adams Park. For this project, UNO students will focus on helping serve at the meals and interact with the seniors.  UNO students will also attend the Blackburn culinary class a few times during the project to develop relationships with student partners.  UNO students are expected to arrive at Adam’s Park no later than 11:30 am each Wednesday. Upon arrival, UNO students will set up supplies, help Blackburn students unload the food, serve drinks, and get to know the seniors. Throughout the meal, UNO students are able to interact with both Blackburn students and seniors. UNO students are also expected to visit Blackburn Alternative Program to create meaningful relationships with the Blackburn students. UNO students have the option of shadowing Blackburn’s social worker, Ms. Bonam. Over the semester, UNO students will work on a project identified by Adams Park Senior Center that supports the relationships, dignity, and worth of the participants of Adams Park Center.
