Fall Festival (Fall 2017): 2017-18 Educational Support Autism Society of NE Service Learning Academy (SLA), Special Education and Communication Disorders Service Learning Course None Fall 2017-18 None None 14 252 0 0 0 0 Raise Awareness UNO students from Dr. Ritzman’s autism spectrum disorders class develop activities for a Fall Festival for children (preschool to school age) who are a part of the Autism Society of Nebraska. This project reinforces classroom curriculum for UNO students by practicing supports and knowledge about ASD and implementing them in the form of a Fall Festival. The festival benefits ASN by having a gathering for children and families to celebrate fall/Halloween that they may not be able to participate in the larger public. Public spaces and some school activities are not always catered towards individuals with autism, causing and overwhelming experience. The students make this environment friendly and safe for the families to participate.

Students are expected to create a presentation (or write a clear and concise paper) summarizing their service learning experience, integrating key concepts from class, assignments and group discussions. In short, in the presentation or paper, students will research and inform their classmates on their selected nonprofit organization’s history, significance, goals/mission statement, rationale, description of stakeholders and targeted groups, events, program activities, planned outcomes, management plan, financial support/budget, and their personal experience volunteering at the organization. Each student is expected to volunteer at least five hours of community service to the selected local nonprofit organization from the list provided. The ASN Fall Festival will be conducted via Zoom this semester. UNO SLP and OT students will be split into small groups and develop video models of activities ASN participants can do in the comfort of their own home. All brainstorming sessions between UNO SLP and Creighton OT students will happen via Zoom – meeting times will be scheduled by group members based on their individual schedules. All activities recorded will still be based around a Fall Festival theme.

UNO and Creighton students will design activities for participants on the autism spectrum to build upon various gross motor and speech skills during the annual Autism Society of Nebraska (ASN) Fall Festival. UNO graduate students will apply knowledge gained through course content and presentations to this project.

The Shape of Collaboration (Spring 2020): 2019-20 (1194) Arts, Culture and Humanities, Educational Support, Health and Wellness Autism Society of NE, Black Elk Educational Leadership, Service Learning Academy (SLA) Service Learning Course None Spring 2019-20 Spring 2019-20 19 285 0 25 250 0 STEM/STEM Education, Develop./Physical Disability, Art Graduate students from UNO Instructor Tami Williams’ Educational Leadership course collaborated with Ms. Danielle Elsasser’s 5rd grade students from Black Elk Elementary and adults with autism from the Autism Center of Nebraska (ACN). This project allowed the elementary students to foster relationships between themselves, UNO grad students, and the clients from ACN through the creation of STEAM based collaboration activities. Some of these activities included making origami, slime, and tinker toys. UNO students benefited by the gained experience of making lesson plans and working with students and adults with disabilities. To culminate the project, origami butterflies that were made during the project were hung on light up trees and given to Black Elk and ACN.

Both the members of the MCCD and the students from UNO NSSLHA/Collegiate Sertoma will present. In recognition of Autism Awareness/Acceptance Month, members of UNO NSSLHA/Collegiate Sertoma will share their year round work with the Autism Society of Nebraska.

In the informative speech, the students will talk about their research on the different areas of improvement within the community. Following this speech, the students will each choose a nonprofit of their choice and give a persuasive speech as to how the nonprofit is contributing to the area of focus they chose for the informative speech.
