Etiquette Through Music (Spring 2018): 2017-18 Arts, Culture and Humanities, Educational Support Courteous Kids, Western Hills Elementary, Omaha Public Schools Music, Service Learning Academy (SLA) Service Learning Course None Spring 2017-18 None None 11 220 0 12 132 0 Youth Programming, Music/Dance In partnership with Courteous Kids, UNO elementary music students work with Western Hills Elementary School students who participate in the music elective course and are participants of etiquette classes. The UNO students develop piggyback songs in order to help the Western Hills students remember the etiquette rules they learned in etiquette class. Together they practice the songs and they will be applying their songs at their culminating event, a luncheon. Courteous Kids presented information to students near end of project.

Mary Budz from Courteous Kidz also helped at WH with teaching manners for meal time. The students at WH then met at UNO (CEC 201) to have a luncheon to practice their manners over a pasta lunch. They sang songs about manners that UNO students had written.

They will observe the UNO Symphonic Wind Ensemble, discuss marching band basics with a UNO student majoring in music education, and be paired up with a member of the UNO marching band to participate in marching band rehearsal. Marching Band Buddies (Fall 2019): 2019-20 (1170) Arts, Culture and Humanities, Educational Support Western Hills Elementary, Omaha Public Schools Music, Service Learning Academy (SLA) Service Learning Course None Fall 2019-20 Fall 2019-20 11 33 0 11 3 0 Music/Dance College band students from Josh Kearney’s MUS 3610 partner up with a 6th grade students from Western Hills Elementary. Students learned marching band techniques taught by UNO students and built relationships with UNO students. The college students also get to develop their teaching skills during this interaction.

UNO Elementary Music Methods students will be teaching etiquette to students at Western Hills Elementary School with the help of community partner Courteous Kids. UNO students will create original piggyback songs, which change the lyrics of popular songs to teach a specific lesson. The students will have the opportunity to use this method to teach important life skills to elementary students.
