The workshop covers career opportunities, financial literacy, job readiness and healthy living. The STEAM Academy is free to attend and is a collaborative effort with Omaha Public Schools, for up to 20 kids in grades 7-12.

We received a grant from Target Corporation to plant over 125 shade trees in the wake or understory or the ash trees in an effort to sustain the community forest.
Communication and Leadership: 2022-23 (3083) Educational Support Urban League of Nebraska Engineering and Construction, Service Learning Academy (SLA) Service Learning None None Spring 2022-23 None 14 518 0 0 0 0 Students enrolled in ENGR 100 (Interpersonal Skills for Engineers) will teach topics related to their coursework to 5th and 6th grade students from the CLC After-School Program at Franklin Elementary School. UNO students are paired off into small teams and each team will get the opportunity to practice their topic presentation one week before they are asked to go to Franklin and work with the elementary students. Programs can become involved with youth at different stages of absenteeism, with schools referring youth who have 5-10 unexcused absences up to the county attorney’s officer referring youth to the program when their level of absences requires legal intervention. Truancy programs can also be part of diversion.
Tree Planting Project: Mandan Park (Spring 2021): 2020-21 (1920) Environmental Stewardship Inclusive Communities, Urban Bird and Nature Alliance, Urban League of Nebraska Service Learning Academy (SLA) Volunteering Volunteerism None Spring 2020-21 Spring 2020-21 12 4 0 17 4 75 Gardens/Plantlife, Climate and Sustainability "The Urban Bird & Nature Alliance facilitated the planting of 125 shade trees along the Mandan Park trail on 13th and Missouri Avenue. Community volunteers along with UNO students and interns participated in the event. Bellevue, Creighton and College or St. Mary’s students were also part of the event. The project was an effort to sustain the urban forest along a trail that lost over 68 ash trees. People walk and bike along the trail and need shade. The trees will reduce heat islands as well as improve air quality. Sponsors and funders were the Arbor Day Foundation and the Hubbard Community Forestry Awards. Over 75 families, individuals and students from surrounding schools such as South High and PACE participated. Students, residents and the community at large learns about the importance of the urban forest. They work together to sustain and maintain the tree canopy either in their own neighborhood or park or other neighborhoods and parkland. They learn about the need for trees in barren areas, the infestation of the emerald ash borer on the city ash trees, reducing heat islands, improving air quality and the many benefits of trees. They learn about environmental justice. They also learn how to work together collaboratively to build their own environment which builds on pride of place. Together we leave a legacy of trees behind for ourselves and for future generations.
Urban League of Nebraska Scholarship Workshops: 2020-21 (1682) Educational Support Urban League of Nebraska Barbara Weitz Community Engagement Center (CEC) Knowledge and Resource Sharing Workshop None Fall 2020-21 Spring 2020-21 0 0 0 0 0 0 "This workshop focuses on engaging eligible seniors within the Urban League of Nebraska, 7 OPS schools, as well as other school districts, to apply for the ULN Scholarship/MCC Scholarships. FAFSA, essay writing, community service requirements, letters of recommendation, transcripts, ACT/SAT, and importance of interviewing will be covered. The outcomes is for 90% of ULN eligible program seniors, as well as at least 100 total submissions.

2022 Goodrich Scholarship Applicant Analysis (Fall 2021): 2021-22 (2459) Economic Impact, Educational Support, Social Justice Urban League of Nebraska Goodrich Scholarship Program Knowledge and Resource Sharing Access to Higher Education None Fall 2021-22 None 0 0 0 0 0 0 Education, Disadvantaged Populations, Employment and Workforce, Capacity Building Based on data from the state if NE department of education's financial aid office it shows that completion and submission rates are below the national average and that the target of OPS 7 high schools showed that they are below the state average. State is lower than the national. Urban league and Goodrich have partnered to learn how the pandemic has contributed to the change and the role that FAFSA plays in that. Source link for other impacts/outcomes of 19 + million lost by the state. The project contributes to student sucess for UBL students and enrollment overall. Addtionally, it benefits youth who can't access higher education when able based on deadlines, supports state funds driven by FAFSA dollars, allows Goodrich to connect potential students who might benefit from better deadlines and possible increase for them to work with the seven omaha public schools to help them understand the barriers due to lack of bandwidth, and this support UBL as a pipeline program.
African American Psychology (Fall 2022): 2022-23 (2790) Social Justice Boys and Girls Club of the Midlands, Culxr House, Urban League of Nebraska Psychology, Service Learning Academy (SLA) Service Learning Course None Fall 2022-23 Fall 2022-23 35 385 0 0 0 1 Inclusion, Diversity & Equity The purpose of this project is for UNO college students to develop their understanding of African American psychology through the student philanthropy model of service learning. UNO students are seeking organizations that are Black-led and Black-focused. Students will work with select community partners during the semester for their final course project. With this project, UNO students will be required to volunteer for a minimum of 5 hours and do something tangible in the community. Volunteer opportunities will be based on the needs of the organization. Students will be learning about service leadership and will present how they used leadership/course content in their service work. For the final presentation, students will do their own independent research into the organization and present that along with their experiences volunteering for the organization of their choice. At the end of the semester, students will vote for one organization to receive the $1000 grant. MPI service learning course PSYC 4150.850

Panelists will share their life experiences, as well as lessons learned, as they inspire others to consider STEM careers. Panelists are: Deann Akins-Lewenthal, Ph.D., director of food safety and microbiology for Conagra Brands; Lydia Kang M.D., assistant professor of internal medicine at UNMC and author of historical, young adult and non-fiction books including: ""Quackery: A Brief History of the Worst Ways to Cure Everything"" (co-authored with Nate Pedersen); Amelia Tangeman, STEM outreach coordinator at the University of Nebraska at Omaha; and Nicole Mitchell, coordinator, the Whitney Young Academy and Project Ready, Urban League of Nebraska.
