Participants increase awareness of the Omaha community, their needs, assets, personnel, and practice. Participants demonstrate an understanding of the Pre-K-12 Service-Learning Standards for Quality Practice (NYLC, 2008). Participants understand the benefits of service learning and its connections to other key frameworks such as AAC&U High Impact Practices, 40 Developmental Assets, 21st Century Skills, and standards-driven curriculum. UNO, P-12, after-school program faculty, and community partners build collaborative relationships and begin service learning project planning. Participants are prepared to create quality service learning experiences.

Three Days of Service - 10/17/17: 2017-18 (110) Economic Impact Open Door Mission, South High Magnet, Omaha Public Schools Student Service and Leadership Collaborative (The Collaborative) Volunteering Volunteerism None Fall 2017-18 None 2 0 0 32 0 1 Homelessness/Shelter Project 1 (15 People): Campus Clean Up We will be doing some trash pickup around our six city block campus and inside our buildings courtyards and playgrounds. Also, may do some light weeding in around of need and sweeping of sidewalks. This will be outdoors. If there is major inclement weather we will have a backup project. Project 2 (15 People): Food Preparation and Sorting, Organizing, Shelving Donations In the beginning we will be working in the kitchen and Dining Hall on food preparation needs for the day/week, after that, we will move to our Timberlake Outreach Center to Sort, Organize, and Shelve donations for community members in need.

In the informative speech, the students will talk about their research on the different areas of improvement within the community. Following this speech, the students will each choose a nonprofit of their choice and give a persuasive speech as to how the nonprofit is contributing to the area of focus they chose for the informative speech. Students will research and inform fellow groups on the nonprofit organization’s history, significance, goals/mission statement, rationale, stakeholders and targeted groups, events, program activities, planned outcomes, clients, staffing, management plan, financial support/budget, and their personal experience volunteering at the organization. UNO students are seeking organizations that are Black-led and Black-focused. Students will work with select community partners during the semester for their final course project. With this project, UNO students will be required to volunteer for a minimum of 5 hours and do something tangible in the community. Volunteer opportunities will be based on the needs of the organization. Students will be learning about service leadership and will present how they used leadership/course content in their service work. For the final presentation, students will do their own independent research into the organization and present that along with their experiences volunteering for the organization of their choice. At the end of the semester, students will vote for one organization to receive the $1000 grant. PSYC 4150.850 MPI
