Description : Blackburn Alternative Program helps students achieve their social and academic goals through smaller classes, flexible scheduling, and supportive staffing. Food for Thought is a long-term service learning project that connects the culinary program at Blackburn with the senior’s programming at Adams Park Community Center. Every Wednesday, Blackburn students will create a healthy meal for the seniors at Adams Park. For this project, UNO students will focus on helping serve at the meals and interact with the seniors.  UNO students will also attend the Blackburn culinary class a few times during the project to develop relationships with student partners.  UNO students are expected to arrive at Adam’s Park no later than 11:30 am each Wednesday. Upon arrival, UNO students will set up supplies, help Blackburn students unload the food, serve drinks, and get to know the seniors. Throughout the meal, UNO students are able to interact with both Blackburn students and seniors. UNO students are also expected to visit Blackburn Alternative Program to create meaningful relationships with the Blackburn students. UNO students have the option of shadowing Blackburn’s social worker, Ms. Bonam. Over the semester, UNO students will work on a project identified by Adams Park Senior Center that supports the relationships, dignity, and worth of the participants of Adams Park Center.

Description : UNO students enrolled in Kersten Borer SOWK 1500-001: Social Work and Civic Engagement will research selected sites in ADL’s Walk Against Hate and interview community members who have a connection to the site. These interviews are recorded and turned into videos (Vidgrid) or podcasts that are played on the ADL website (adlplains.org). Students can also provide essays, artwork, or blurbs about their thoughts associated with the site. In addition, UNO students work alongside the Secondary Success Program (SSP) and Blackburn Art students to create pieces of art for a site or two in ADL’s Walk Against Hate. Description : GWO is an ongoing partnership between Dr. Ritzman’s SPED 4750 Childhood Language Disorders class and Blackburn Alternative Program (BAP) high school students. Each year, the project has a different focus and community partner. This year, the project focus was on the 30 Americans exhibit at the Joslyn Art Museum. The UNO students taught 5 sessions throughout the semester in either Ms. Colon (English and Yearbook) or Ms. George (Arts and Computer Graphics) classes. SPED 4750 students learned to work hands-on in any type of classroom (“Language is Everywhere”) and BAP students received learning assistance in their respective classrooms. As a community partner, the Joslyn Art Museum worked with the Blackburn students to create podcasts focusing on the various art installments at the Joslyn. The Blackburn students’ podcasts can be heard on the Joslyn Art Museum's YouTube channel.
